Step-by-step on how to string a badminton racket

It’s easy and fun to string a badminton racket.

After you have completed the free stringing process, we shall then proceed to the tightening process and work with your stringing machine. Interesting, right? First of all, I would like to stretch that there are so many different types of stringing machine in the market, starting from machines with drop weight to spring tension head, and from Portable table top mini-machines to those standard spring tensioned machine with stands. And of course, the more costly one would be the electronic stringing machine. Here, I am going to demonstrate with the one I think the most productive and most convenient to use, the standard spring tensioned machine with stands.

Stinging a badminton racket can be completed in 2 simple processes: -

1) The free stringing process. 2) The tightening process.

Ok, once your customer selected the string, which usually comes pre-packed, you would have to cut the knot that binds the string and loosen up the string from its packing in a proper manner so that the string won’t get twitched when you do the “Free String.” Follow the 2nd diagram shown below: -

Free stringing process

Once the string is loosening up, you are now ready to do the free string. Before you string your racket for the very first time you have to determine whether you would like to string the one-piece (finished stringing with two knot) or two-piece stringing (finished stringing with 4 knots). In principle any racket can be strung using one piece of string, which I am going to demonstrate now.

Free stringing the main string

1)     Hold the tip of the string and entered the string, started from bottom grommet 1A, nearest to the t-joint of the first half of the racquet and penetrated to the top grommet 36A of the first half. Entered from the top grommet of the second half, 36B and penetrated the bottom grommet of the second half 1B, nearest to the t-joint to complete Diagram 2. Follow the diagram shown below: -

Now, pull the string to about 2 meters and continued putting the strings in and out of the grommets in the same pattern until you come to the end of the first half as shown in diagram 3. Please take note that you will have to skip one bottom grommet (11B) before putting your string to the last grommet (12B) to complete the first half (B). on your last string. After completing the first half, in most rackets, you will be able to count from top to bottom, on the side grommet that has not been strung. And if you are in the right track, there should be 13 of such unstrung side grommet (from grommet No: 13B to 25B). The string remained after finished the main string of the first half should be about 2 feet and is facing down towards the racket handle. Follow the diagram shown above.

2)     To string the second half, hold the tip of the string and entered from the bottom grommet (2A) of the second half, penetrated the top grommet (35A) and then continued putting the strings in and out of the grommets in the same pattern until you come to the end of the second half. Again, you will have to skip one bottom grommet (11A) before putting your last main string to grommet No: 12A.

After completing the second half, in most rackets, you will be able to count from top to bottom, on the side grommet that has not been strung. And if you are in the right track, there should be 13 of such unstrung side grommet (from grommet No: 13A to 25A) in most of the racket. The string remained after finished the main string of the second half should be very long and should be enough for you to finish the cross string.

   Free Stringing the cross string

1)     After you have finished free stringing on the main string, hold the tip of the string and push it into grommet No: 8A to start the cross string. Pull the string in about 2 to 3 inches as shown in the diagram 1. Hold the string between your first finger and your thumb and moved it up near to the top of the frame and weaved. Weaved the string between your index finger and first finger, the string should go all the way, one above and the other below the main strings until you come to an end and passed the last main string, penetrating grommet 8B. Check properly, to make sure you have not run over or under a main string twice. Very soon you will be able to master it and your fingers will work automatically and you don’t need further checking when it has become a routine. After passing the last main string leading to grommet 8B, push it into grommet 8B. Now you have completed waiving the first cross string as shown in diagram 3. Bingo! Is so simple, right? Follow the diagram shown below: -

2)     Once the string is out of grommet 8B, pulled the string to its limit and you could see the first cross string straighten in the string bed. Now hold the tip of the string and push in into grommet 9B. Now continue waiving your second cross string, the same pattern you waived your first cross string, that is weaving the string alternately above and below to past the main strings until you come to an end and passed the last main string into the opposite grommet, 9A. The second cross string should be out from grommet 9A before entering again through grommet 10A to grommet 10B.  Follow the diagram above.

3)     You should continue waiving the same pattern. Weaved the string between your index finger and first finger and the string should go all the way, one above and the other below the main strings. After about 2-3 weave, pull the string longer to about 3 inches and hold the string between both fingers to move the string upward towards the top of the frame and continue weaving the string alternately above and below to past the main strings until you have completed the whole process of cross string and the string finally reached the last grommet of 26A to 26B. I do not wish you to go any further with the cross string as upon pulling with stringing machine on the tightening process, the string above this level will twist. You might need to use your finger to push up the main string, allowing the cross string to penetrate grommet 26A to 26B as shown in diagram 3. Congratulation! You have completed the whole free stringing process. Follow the diagram shown above.
